No.130 몰리토르 호텔

The Paris Pool Where the Bikini Made Its Debut The bikini, now synonymous with summer, made its public debut in Paris in 1946. Its name was borrowed from Bikini Atoll in the Pacific, where the United States had recently conducted nuclear tests. Designer Louis Réard believed his creation would be just as explosive. At the time, however, it was considered scandalously revealing. Every professional model he approached refused to wear it. Instead, the world's first bikini was presented by a cabaret dancer beside the pool at Molitor, one of Paris's grand public swimming baths. Today, that pool forms the heart of Molitor Hotel & Spa Paris. This edition of Urban Research heads to the water. When Molitor opened in 1929, it was conceived not as a luxury hotel but as a civic leisure facility. As industrialisation shortened working hours, Parisians found themselves with something relatively new: free time. Many households still lacked private bathrooms, making public bathing not only practical but fashionable. Molitor arrived at precisely the right moment, reflecting a city learning how to enjoy leisure. Its architecture tells the same story. Designed in the Art Deco style and inspired by the great transatlantic ocean liners of the era, the building evokes the experience of boarding a luxury ship. Long exterior galleries resemble passenger decks, while rows of private changing cabins, rounded windows and elegant railings reinforce the nautical illusion. Unsurprisingly, Molitor quickly became one of Paris's most fashionable social destinations. The story, however, did not end there. In 1989, declining visitor numbers and years of ageing infrastructure forced the pool to close. Left abandoned for more than two decades, Molitor entered an unexpected second life. Graffiti artists quietly claimed the building as their unofficial studio, transforming hundreds of changing cabins into an immense open-air canvas. Though never formally recognised, many Parisians came to regard it as the city's largest graffiti gallery. When Molitor reopened in 2014 as a luxury hotel and spa, its new owners resisted the temptation to erase that chapter. Instead, they embraced it. Graffiti remains woven into the property through permanent works, artist commissions and ongoing collaborations with contemporary creatives. Rather than restoring the building to an imagined past, they allowed its layered history to become part of its identity. That is what makes Molitor memorable. Not simply because it offers one of Paris's most beautiful outdoor pools, but because the building has continually reinvented itself: first as a public bath, then as the stage for the bikini's debut, later as an abandoned playground for street artists, and finally as a hotel that chose to preserve, rather than conceal, the traces of its past. If Paris isn't on your itinerary this summer, Molitor still makes a cameo appearance in Emily in Paris Season 3, where its striking pool once again takes centre stage. MARBLEROCKET + Molitor Hotel & Spa Paris
