정원의 계절 정원에서는 찡그린 얼굴을 볼 수 없죠. 정원이 주는 효과일 거예요. 정원이 주목받는 계절이에요. 서울숲에서는 국제정원박람회가 열리고 있고요. 마블로켓의 공부노트, 이번 주 어반리서치에서는 세계에서 가장 아름다운 정원으로 통하는 캐나다의 부차트 가든(Butchart Gardens)을 알아볼게요. 캐나다의 서쪽 끝에는 빅토리아가 있어요. 우리가 잘 아는 밴쿠버 섬의 가장 남단에 위치하고 있죠. 밴쿠버가 속한 브리티시콜림비아 주의 주도를 밴쿠버 시로 알고 계신 분이 많지만, 빅토리아 시가 주도예요. 캐나다는 영연방 국가이기 때문에 영국 분위기가 많이 남아있지만, 그중에서도 밴쿠버 특히 빅토리아는 영국풍이 강해요. 캐나다인들이 은퇴 후에 머물고 싶어 하는 도시로 유명하죠. 빅토리아에서 넓은 부지를 차지하는 부차트 가든은 사계절로도 모자라서 크리스마스 시즌까지 계절에 맞게 연 5회 조경이 바뀌어요. 원래 이 정원 부지는 시멘트 원료인 석회암을 채굴하는 광산이었어요. 부차트 부부가 없었더라면 부차트 가든은 없었을지도 몰라요. 로버트 부차트는 시멘트 제조업자였어요. 석회암을 채굴한 흔적인 구덩이를 보고 그의 부인인 제니 부차트가 그곳에 정원을 만들자고 제안했죠. 인근 농장의 흙을 실어와 구덩이를 메우고 묘목과 꽃을 심기 시작했어요. 1905년 무렵 일이에요. 여행을 다니면서 희귀하고 이국적인 관목들을 심었다고 해요. 푹 파인 곳은 자연스럽게 선큰 가든이 됐고요. 이곳의 아름다움이 알려지면서 더 많은 사람들이 찾기 시작했고. 정원의 규모는 커졌어요. 선큰 가든 외에 로즈 가든, 이탈리아 가든, 재패니즈 가든 등이 생겨났어요. 재패니즈 가든에는 일본의 유명한 조경가인 기시다 이사부로가 설계했죠. 곡선 형태의 오솔길, 정교하게 다듬어진 나무, 물 없는 정원인 가레산스이와 대나무숲을 뜻하는 치쿠린도 조성되어 있어요. 로즈 가든에서는 수백 종의 장미를 볼 수 있고, 이탈리아 가든은 고전적이고 우아한 스타일의 정원이에요. 그러나 무엇보다도 부차트 가든의 랜드마크는 선큰가든이죠. 채석장이었던 이곳을 예술로 승화시킨 곳이니까요. 주변 지면보다 푹 꺼져 있는 독특한 지형 때문에 전망대에서 내려다보면 분화구 같은 지형이 거대한 꽃밭으로 보인다고 해요. 한 사람의 아이디어로 시작된 정원은 이제 해마다 100만 명 이상의 관광객들이 찾는 정원이 됐어요. 캐나다에서 로키산맥 다음으로 찾는 곳이라고 하죠. 비가 많이 내리는 온화한 기후로 수목이 잘 자라는 기후. 부차트 가든의 꽃과 나무들이야말로 지구상에서 행복한 식물이라는 생각이 드네요. It is rare to see a furrowed brow among the flowers.As gardens come into the spotlight once again, Seoul Forest is currently hosting the Seoul International Garden Show. This week, Marble Rocket's Urban Research turns its attention to one of the world's most celebrated gardens: Butchart Gardens in Canada. On Canada's western edge lies Victoria, the southernmost city on Vancouver Island. While many assume Vancouver to be the capital of British Columbia, that distinction belongs to Victoria. As part of the Commonwealth, Canada retains traces of its British heritage, but nowhere is that influence more evident than here. Victoria, with its manicured streets, afternoon teas and relaxed pace, is often regarded as one of Canada's most desirable places to retire. Occupying a vast site on the outskirts of the city, Butchart Gardens transforms itself not only through the four seasons but once again for Christmas, with five major horticultural displays staged throughout the year.The story begins not with flowers, but with stone. The site was originally a limestone quarry supplying raw materials for cement production. Robert Butchart, a successful cement manufacturer, had exhausted the quarry by the early twentieth century. Rather than abandoning the scarred landscape, his wife Jennie Butchart envisioned something altogether different: a garden.Around 1905, fertile soil was brought in from neighbouring farms to fill the quarry floor, and trees, shrubs and flowers gradually took root. During their travels, the Butcharts collected rare and exotic plants from around the world, many of which found a home here. What had once been a deep excavation slowly evolved into the garden's defining feature—the Sunken Garden. As word spread, visitors began arriving in growing numbers, and the gardens continued to expand.Today, the estate encompasses the Rose Garden, the Italian Garden and the Japanese Garden, each with its own distinct character. The Japanese Garden was designed by renowned landscape architect Isaburo Kishida, featuring winding woodland paths, meticulously pruned trees, dry rock gardens (karesansui) and tranquil bamboo groves (chikurin). The Rose Garden showcases hundreds of rose varieties, while the Italian Garden offers a more formal, classically composed landscape. Yet it is the Sunken Garden that remains the unmistakable heart of Butchart Gardens.Few places illustrate the transformation of industrial land into landscape quite so poetically. Viewed from the surrounding lookout, the former quarry resembles an immense floral amphitheatre, its crater-like form overflowing with colour. What began as one woman's vision has become one of Canada's most visited attractions, welcoming more than a million visitors each year. It is often said to be second only to the Canadian Rockies among the country's most popular destinations. Victoria's mild, rain-fed climate allows trees and flowers to flourish with remarkable abundance.
