The arrival of a branch of the Centre Pompidou — often mentioned alongside the Louvre and the Musée d’Orsay as one of France’s great cultural institutions — in the middle of Seoul is enough to command attention.The original Centre Pompidou in Paris famously turned architecture inside out, exposing its pipes, ducts, escalators and structural systems on the building’s exterior. In Korea, however, it has taken on an entirely different architectural language. Here is the story surrounding Centre Pompidou Hanwha. The annex of 63 Building, once home to an aquarium, has been replaced by a vast translucent glass volume — a luminous box on the edge of the Han River. It is the work of French architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte, whose portfolio includes projects for the Louvre in Paris, the British Museum in London and the Rijksmuseum in the Netherlands. He is also no stranger to Korea, having participated in the design of Terminal 2 at Incheon International Airport. Wilmotte is particularly known for his deft handling of natural light. His extensive use of glass is not simply a matter of transparency or spectacle. It is a way of drawing daylight deep into the building. His architecture is often defined by clean lines, restraint and a deliberate absence of ornament. Yet restraint does not mean monotony. Rather, it is a form of architectural courtesy: a way of allowing the collection, rather than the building itself, to take the foreground. There is also a subtle element of mix and match in Wilmotte’s work. He often reinterprets the courtyard as a contemporary device for openness and exchange, while experimenting with the dialogue between different materials. Centre Pompidou Hanwha may appear at first glance to be a minimalist glass building, but its surfaces bring together limestone, terrazzo and other finishes, creating a quiet contrast in texture and weight. So what lies inside? The ground floor will house an auditorium, multi-station spaces and studios, designed to host workshops and public programmes linked to the exhibitions. The main galleries unfold across the second and third floors, where two large exhibition halls will accommodate the museum’s programme. The double-height second gallery is especially suited to a wide range of works, from painting to installation, multimedia and sculpture. Outside, another point of interest is 63 Oudolf Garden, designed by the internationally renowned landscape designer Piet Oudolf. Conceived as a naturalistic garden, it is expected to become one of the museum’s most popular spots, extending the experience of the institution beyond the gallery walls and into the landscape. Centre Pompidou Hanwha is, in fact, the Pompidou’s third overseas outpost. It follows Centre Pompidou Málaga in Spain, known for its colourful glass cube, and Centre Pompidou x West Bund Museum Project in Shanghai, designed by British architect David Chipperfield. Now Seoul joins that network.
