자기식 대로 공간을 구성하는 것 대구 북구에 재미있는 공간이 있다는 소문을 듣고 찾아갔어요. ‘미래농원’이라는 기존의 이름을 영어 이니셜 조합으로 바꾼 ‘MRNW’이라는 복합 공간이에요. 2022년 오픈한 이후 여전히 독특한 정체성을 유지하고 있어요. 대형 카페로 생각하는 분도 많겠지만, 이곳은 정원과 카페, 문화적 활동을 결합한 공간이에요. 이곳은 30년 이상 직접 가꾼 나무들이 있는 농원이었어요. 더 많은 사람들이 이 공간을 누릴 수 있도록 ‘MRNW’으로 정체성을 바꾸었죠. 문화공간이 드문 이 지역에서 눈에 띄는 핑크색 건물은 모로코의 ‘마라케시‘라는 도시에서 영감을 받았다고 해요. 마라케시는 사막 한가운데 붉은 흙빛 건물들로 유명한 역사적인 도시죠. 두 개의 건물과 정원으로 이루어진 MRNW에서 가장 돋보이는 곳은 단연 소나무 정원이에요. 7m 높이의 소나무들 사이로 향나무, 생강나무, 떨기나무 등이 어우러져 있어요. 거울 벽이 사방을 둘러싸고 있고, 마치 정원의 한가운데 있다는 착시 효과를 안겨줘요. 정원의 한쪽에는 구구스라는 이름의 거위들이 산책하는 모습을 볼 수 있어요. 4,5마리의 ‘구구’ 소리를 듣다 보면 농원에 있다는 느낌이 더해지죠. 헛간을 개조한 야외에서도 음료를 즐길 수 있지만 MRNW의 매력적인 공간은 바로 분홍색 건물이에요. 두 개의 건물 사이에는 원형의 중정이 있는데요, 이 중정에 있는 모감주나무는 여름에 선명한 노란 꽃을 피우는 나무예요. 계단을 올라와서 내려다봐도 나무의 멋진 자태를 볼 수 있어요. 내부에서는 꾸준히 전시와 공연 등이 진행되고 이어요. 지난 3월에는 재즈 공연이 열렸고, 그 뒤에는 가구 브랜드 ‘비트라’(Vitra) 전시를 진행했어요. 전시와 행사를 연계하는 특별한 메뉴를 선보이기도 하고요. 최근에는 ‘장 프루베 라운지’도 오픈했어요. 프랑스 디자이너 브랜드인 장 프루베 가구를 단순히 눈으로 보는 것이 아니라 카페 의자로 직접 경험할 수 있는 기회를 마련했죠. 카페에서의 경험을 마치고 내려오니 또 다른 나무들이 눈에 띄었어요. 석류나무, 배롱나무, 동백나무, 모과나무, 단풍나무들이 출구를 장식하고 있었어요. 농원이라고 하기에는 콘텐츠가 있고, 카페라고 하기에는 소나무 정원과 나무들이 자연을 이루고 있는 곳. MRNW는 단순히 예쁜 카페가 아니라 자신만의 정체성을 만든 공간이에요. 그러니 모두가 하는 대로 하면 재미가 없죠. ‘자신이 가지고 있는 것이 무엇인지, 여기에 무엇을 더하면 새로움이 생겨날지 고민해 보게 만든 곳이었어요. Shaping a Space on Its Own Terms MARBLEROCKET had heard whispers about an intriguing place in Buk-gu, Daegu, and decided to go for ourselves. MRNW is a hybrid space whose name is derived from the initials of its former identity, Mirae Farm. Since opening in 2022, it has maintained a distinctly unique character. While some might think of it simply as a large café, it is in fact a place where a garden, a café, and cultural programming come together. Originally, this was a farm nurtured over more than 30 years, filled with trees carefully grown by hand. In an effort to share this landscape with a wider audience, it was reimagined as MRNW. In a neighborhood where cultural venues are rare, the striking pink building immediately stands out. Its design draws inspiration from Marrakech, a historic city known for its reddish, earth-toned architecture rising from the desert. Among the two buildings and the garden that make up MRNW, the pine garden is undoubtedly the highlight. Towering 7-meter pines are interwoven with junipers, spicebush, and clusters of shrubs. Mirrored walls surround the space, creating an optical illusion that places you right at the center of the garden. On one side, a group of geese named “Gugu” wander freely. Hearing their soft calls adds to the sense of being in a living, breathing farm. While you can enjoy drinks outdoors in a converted barn, the most captivating space is undoubtedly the pink building. Between the two buildings lies a circular courtyard, anchored by a golden rain tree that bursts into vivid yellow blooms in summer. Whether viewed from above or from within, the tree reveals a different kind of beauty. Inside, MRNW regularly hosts exhibitions and performances. In March, a jazz concert took place, followed by an exhibition by the furniture brand Vitra. Special menus are often created in connection with these events, extending the experience beyond visual appreciation. Recently, a Jean Prouvé Lounge has also opened, offering visitors the chance not just to view, but to sit on and experience the iconic furniture of the French designer. As I made my way out after spending time in the café, another layer of the space revealed itself. Pomegranate trees, crape myrtles, camellias, quince trees, and maples line the exit. It’s a place too rich in content to be called just a farm, yet too immersed in nature to be defined as merely a café. MRNW is not simply a beautiful venue—it is a space that has carved out its own identity.
