대구에 갔다. 추사의 그림수업을 받으러. 서울을 벗어나 마블로켓이 주목한 도시는 대구예요. 대구 하면 '간송미술관'을 빼놓을 수 없죠. 간송미술관의 시작은 1938년, 간송 전형필이 설립한 보화각이에요. 우리 문화재가 해외로 맥없이 유출되던 시기에 그는 평생에 걸쳐 우리의 작품을 수집하고 지켜냈어요. 대구간송미술관은 간송 컬렉션을 볼 수 있는 상설전을 열고 있어요. 김홍도, 신윤복을 포함해 고려와 조선시대 작품과 유물들을 볼 수 있죠. 이번 어반리서치에서 간송미술관을 소개하는 이유는 7월 5일까지 《추사의 그림 수업》이라는 특별 기획전이 열리기 때문이에요. 추사 김정희의 유명한 작품 ‘세한도’를 볼 수 있는 귀한 기회죠. 추사 김정희(1786-1856)는 조선말기의 화가이자 인문학에 통달했던 학자였어요. 조선을 넘어 동북아시아의 지적 네트워크의 중심이었던 인물이라고 해도 과장이 아니에요. 외형에 치중하는 사실주의 화법에서 벗어나 사유의 체계를 ‘필묵’으로 담아냈으니까요. 이번 전시에서는 그의 대표작과 제자들의 작품을 함께 살펴볼 수 있어요. 세한도 물기 없이 먹만 층층이 쌓아 여백의 기품을 보여주는 ‘세한도’는 많은 분들에게 익숙하죠. 제주도 유배 중이던 김정희에게 중국에서 어렵게 구한 귀한 책을 두 번이나 보내준 제자, 이상덕을 위해 그린 작품이에요. 그림 속에 '장무상망’(長毋相忘) 즉 ‘오랫동안 서로 잊지 말자'라는 글귀를 넣어 이상적과의 깊은 우정을 강조했죠. 세한도는 ‘날이 추워진 뒤에 비로소 소나무와 측백나무가 늦게 시듦을 안다’는 의미로 고독함 속에서 변하지 않는 지조를 나타내는 작품이고요. 예림갑을록 유배를 마치고 돌아온 추사는 제자들의 그림을 품평해요. 그 기록이 바로 ‘예림갑을록’이에요. 추사의 품평은 디테일하고 냉정했다고 해요. 유일하게 전해지는 작품은 <팔인수묵산수도>인데요, 추사의 여덟 제자가 그린 산수화예요. 필묵의 미흡함을 지적하기도 하고 외형적 기교를 엄하게 평가하기도 했어요. 스승에 대한 무한 존경을 담은 작품, 스승 앞에서 손을 덜덜 떨며 그린 작품 등 그림에는 재미있는 소개가 적혀 있어요. 팔인수묵산수도 스승 앞에서 손을 덜덜 떨며 그린 작품 스승의 향한 존경심이 집약된 작품 〈고목쟁영 / 허련 〉 추사의 제자 중 ‘조희룡’은 추사의 영향을 받았지만 독자적인 세계를 이룬 사람으로 알려져 있어요. 매화 덕후였던 조희룡은 묵으로 다양한 매화를 그렸어요. 힘 있는 가지에 매달린 풍성한 매화 그림의 병풍은 넋을 놓고 보게 만들죠. 백매 작품과 홍매 두 점도 격조가 남다르고요. <매화서옥 / 조희룡> 추사의 그림수업은 여기까지이지만 신윤복의 <미인도>를 재해석한 AI전시도 흥미로웠어요. <미인도>를 고흐, 고갱, 에곤쉴레, 르누아르 버전으로 재해석한 작품들은 사람들의 인기를 끌었어요. 전시는 흐름과 감응이라는 두 테마의 실감 영상으로 마무리됩니다. 종이로 감상한 간송미술관의 작품들을 미디어 아트로 경험할 수 있는 공간이에요. 간송미술관과 대구. 대구와 간송미술관. 이 둘의 시너지는 예술이 도시의 가치를 올려주는 좋은 예가 되고 있어요. 에곤쉴레 스타일의 미인도 고갱 스타일의 미인도 AI 실감 영상 I went to Daegu—to take a “drawing lesson” from Chusa. Stepping outside of Seoul, the city MARBLEROCKET is focusing on this time is Daegu. And when you think of Daegu, it’s hard to leave out the Kansong Art Museum. Its story begins in 1938, when Kansong Jeon Hyeong-pil founded Bohwagak. At a time when Korean cultural heritage was being helplessly taken overseas, he devoted his life to collecting and preserving these works. Today, the museum presents a permanent collection where visitors can encounter artifacts and artworks from the Goryeo and Joseon periods, including pieces by Kim Hong-do and Shin Yun-bok. The reason we are highlighting the museum in this Urban Research series is the special exhibition currently on view through July 5: “Chusa’s Drawing Lesson.” It’s a rare opportunity to see Chusa Kim Jeong-hui’s iconic work, Sehando. Kim Jeong-hui (1786–1856), known as Chusa, was not only a painter but also a scholar deeply versed in the humanities. It would not be an exaggeration to say that he stood at the center of an intellectual network that extended beyond Joseon into East Asia. Moving away from a style focused on outward realism, he expressed systems of thought through brush and ink. This exhibition brings together his major works alongside those of his disciples. Sehando, with its layered application of dry ink and refined use of empty space, is familiar to many. It was painted during Chusa’s exile in Jeju for his disciple Yi Sang-deok, who had managed to send him rare books from China—twice—under difficult circumstances. Within the painting, Chusa inscribed the phrase “Jangmu sangmang” (長毋相忘), meaning “let us not forget each other for a long time,” emphasizing their deep bond. The title refers to a saying: “Only after the cold sets in do we know that the pine and cypress are the last to wither,” symbolizing unwavering integrity in times of hardship. After returning from exile, Chusa critically reviewed his disciples’ works. These critiques were compiled in Yelim Gapeulrok. His evaluations were known to be detailed and unsparing. One surviving work, Eight Disciples’ Ink Landscapes, brings together paintings by eight of his students. In it, he points out weaknesses in brushwork and sharply critiques superficial technique. Some works express deep reverence for the master, while others—painted with trembling hands in his presence—reveal a sense of tension. Even the annotations accompanying the paintings add an engaging layer of narrative. Among Chusa’s disciples, Jo Hee-ryong is known for absorbing his teacher’s influence while developing a distinct artistic world of his own. Fascinated by plum blossoms, he explored them in a wide range of expressive ink paintings. His folding screens, filled with vigorous branches and abundant blossoms, are mesmerizing to behold. His white and red plum blossom works, in particular, carry an exceptional sense of elegance. While the “lesson” may end there, the exhibition continues with an intriguing twist—an AI reinterpretation of Shin Yun-bok’s Portrait of a Beauty. Reimagined in the styles of Van Gogh, Gauguin, Egon Schiele, and Renoir, these works have drawn significant attention from visitors. The exhibition concludes with immersive media installations under the themes of “Flow” and “Resonance,” offering a way to experience Kansong’s collection beyond the page, through moving images and sound.
