AI와 반대 방향으로 가보기 어반리서치를 재정비하고 돌아왔습니다. 다음 편부터 서울을 넘어 지역의 이야기도 전할 예정입니다. 많은 관심 부탁드려요🙌🏻 서울 회현동에 있는 미술관 ‘피크닉’(piknic)에서 흥미로운 전시가 열리고 있어요. 모든 것이 대량으로 쉽게 생산되는 요즘, 그 지역의 소재로 직접 제작하는 것은 어떤 의미를 가질까요? 전시 제목은 <COMPANY World Affair>. 헬싱키 기반의 ‘디자인 스튜디오 콤파니’가 지난 20년간 전 세계 곳곳을 돌아다니며 지역의 장인들과 만나 그들의 기술에 새로운 아이디어를 더해 물건을 만드는 이야기예요. 그들은 스스로를 디자이너가 아니라 ‘탐정’이라 불러요. 이야기를 추적하고, 맥락을 수집하고, 사라질 것들을 붙잡는 사람들이니까요. 전시는 수집에서 시작해요. 일본의 전통인형인 ‘고케시’, 한국의 ‘자개’, 핀란드의 ‘나무 숟가락’, 러시아의 ‘마트료시카’, 파키스탄의 ‘실란왈리 의자’를 포함해 러시아, 인도, 베트남 등 지역의 손에서 태어난 물건들을 한자리에 모아 놓았어요. 또 다른 전시 공간에는 지역적 특성을 가진 재료를 토대로 스케치와 메모, 재료의 실험들이 이어지고 관람자는 제작 과정 속으로 들어가는 느낌을 받아요. 전시장 사이를 잇는 계단은 기차처럼 연출되어 있어 그들의 여정에 함께하는 느낌이 들죠. 다음에 도착하는 곳은 장인과 콤파니가 협업한 결과물을 볼 수 있어요. 멕시코 장인이 점토로 제작한 촛대, 러시아 장인이 가문비나무로 만든 마트료시카 시리즈, 핀란드의 양모로 만든 ‘아빠와 딸을 위한 댄스슈즈’와 자작나무로 만든 핀란드 ‘동물 퍼즐’, 한국 담양의 장인이 만든 ‘여름에도 비니를 쓰고 싶은 이들을 위한 대나무 비니’와 같은 아이디어 상품 등이죠. 망치질 소리, 나무 자르는 소리가 들려서 전시장이 공방처럼 느껴져요. 러시아 장인이 가문비나무로 만든 마트료시카 시리즈 멕시코 장인이 점토로 제작한 촛대 아빠와 딸을 위한 댄스슈즈 여름에도 비니를 쓰고 싶은 이들을 위한 대나무 비니 전시의 종착지는 ‘시장’이에요. 만들어진 물건들이 활약하는 장소이거든요. 다양한 물건들은 장인과 상인, 사람들을 연결하는 매개체가 되죠. 옥상에 올라가면 왜 이 전시를 기획했는지 자연스럽게 알게 돼요. 마침 색색의 꽃이 활짝 핀 이 계절의 정원에는 거대한 사람 조형과 바람에 따라 나무 날개를 팔락이는 새들을 볼 수 있어요. 물건은 사람들의 영혼에 각인되고 아름답게 기억되기 마련이죠. In a time when almost everything can be mass-produced with ease, what does it mean to make something by hand, using materials rooted in a specific place? Titled COMPANY: World Affair, the exhibition traces the past 20 years of a Helsinki-based design studio, COMPANY. Traveling across the globe, they have met local artisans and collaborated with them—infusing traditional craftsmanship with new ideas to create objects. They don’t call themselves designers, but “detectives”: people who trace stories, gather contexts, and hold onto things on the verge of disappearing. The exhibition begins with a collection. Traditional objects such as Japanese kokeshi dolls, Korean mother-of-pearl, Finnish wooden spoons, Russian matryoshka, and Pakistani Silanwali chairs are brought together—each born from the hands of artisans across regions like Russia, India, and Vietnam. In another space, sketches, notes, and material experiments unfold—offering a glimpse into the process behind making. Visitors feel as if they are stepping into the act of creation itself. A staircase connecting the exhibition spaces is designed like a train, evoking the sensation of traveling alongside the studio on their journey. At the next stop, you encounter the results of these collaborations. There are clay candlesticks crafted by Mexican artisans, a series of sprucewood matryoshka made in Russia, “dance shoes for a father and daughter” made of Finnish wool, and animal puzzles carved from birch. From Korea’s Damyang, there’s even a bamboo beanie—created for those who want to wear a beanie even in summer. The sounds of hammering and wood being cut echo through the space, making the exhibition feel like a working studio. The final destination is the “market”—the place where these objects come to life. Here, the items act as mediators, connecting artisans, merchants, and people. When you step onto the rooftop, the intention behind the exhibition becomes clear. In the garden, now in full bloom with vibrant flowers, you’ll find a monumental human sculpture and birds whose wooden wings flutter in the wind.
