While such reactions may be excessive, the heightened attention toward Joseon history presents a meaningful opportunity. As interest in royal tombs increases, it feels timely to revisit Seonjeongneung, located in the heart of Seoul’s Gangnam district. Seolleung and Jeongneung—together officially known as Seonjeongneung—comprise two royal tombs within one site. Seolleung contains the tombs of King Seongjong, the ninth king of Joseon and grandson of Sejo, and his third queen, Queen Jeonghyeon. Jeongneung holds the tomb of King Jungjong, Seongjong’s son and the eleventh king of Joseon. Father, son, and queen rest side by side in a single landscape. King Seongjong completed the Gyeongguk Daejeon, the comprehensive legal code initiated under Sejo, thereby establishing a Confucian governing order. If Sejo strengthened royal authority through force, Seongjong stabilized it through institutions. Another king buried here, Jungjong, halted the tyranny of Yeonsangun and attempted political reform by appointing the scholar-official Jo Gwangjo. Yet his efforts to realize a new political vision ultimately faltered. Despite his long reign of 38 years, he remains remembered as a somewhat tragic figure. Seonjeongneung thus holds within one forest two kings of markedly different temperaments and legacies. There are about forty royal tombs from the Joseon dynasty, all designated as UNESCO World Heritage sites. Among them, Seonjeongneung is perhaps the most urban. Surrounded by skyscrapers and office towers, it preserves a forest of roughly 73,000 pyeong—about half the size of Gyeongbokgung Palace. Step just a few paces away from the city’s high-rise skyline and you enter a serene grove of pine trees. On a weekday visit, there seemed to be more foreign visitors than Korean ones.
