A Library You Have to Experience, Not Just See on Social Media Whenever we explored cities abroad, we often found ourselves admiring remarkable libraries and thinking, “We wish we had spaces like this in Korea.” That wish has become reality in Uijeongbu. The Uijeongbu Art Library and the Uijeongbu Music Library, both opened in 2019, are leading this change. With the Uijeongbu Design Library scheduled to open this year, the city now feels worthy of being called a true “library tour destination.” The very fact that people travel to Uijeongbu specifically to visit its libraries shows that the planning has already succeeded. Visitors from other regions continue to arrive. At the center of this vision is library director Park Young-ae, head of Uijeongbu’s library operations. She reportedly visited around 140 libraries worldwide, reflecting deeply on the role of library spaces. In particular, she was strongly influenced by the Ishikawa Prefectural Library in Kanazawa, Japan. Its striking architecture, universal design, and thoughtfully developed programs demonstrated how powerful a public library can be within a community, reinforcing her belief in the social value of such spaces. So what is the Uijeongbu Art Library like? On social media, it is already famous as a “photogenic library.” Wide, open windows, a spacious layout, and radial bookshelves spreading out from the center of the first floor create a bold and innovative impression. But this is a place that deserves more than to be consumed as an image. Only by spending time here in person does its true value reveal itself. It is not just a library you want to photograph — it is a library where you want to linger. First, it is a rare place where visitors can freely access expensive and hard-to-find art and design books at no cost. Second, its relaxed atmosphere makes long stays feel effortless rather than tiring. Brightly colored chairs, tables, and lighting express a strong spatial identity while helping visitors feel at ease. True to its name as an art library, the first floor also includes a small exhibition space where works by emerging artists are displayed. We often associate art museums with formality, but libraries are places anyone can enter comfortably. When these two realms meet, the threshold to art naturally lowers. We would especially recommend this library to families with children. The children’s collection area is open and welcoming, making it easy for families to read together. The book circulation rate at Uijeongbu Art Library is said to be more than three times higher than that of a typical public library. A new type of public space has emerged here, created through the meeting of library and art museum.
