고해상도 사진보다 필요한 것 사진은 너무 일상화됐죠. 폰의 진화는 카메라의 진화와 동의어가 됐으니까요. 내 시선으로 관찰하고 느끼는 것보다 사진으로 저장하고 싶은 욕망이 앞서게 됐다고 할까요? 국내 최초의 사진전문 미술관인 ‘뮤지엄 한미’에 다녀왔어요. 삼청동 끝자락에 있는 2층 구조의 건물이에요. 현재 이탈리아를 대표하는 사진작가 ‘루이지 기리’(Luigi Ghirri, 1943-1992)의 작품전이 열리고 있어요. 이탈리아와의 수교 140주년을 기념하는 전시의 제목은 <Infinite Landscapes>, 무한한 풍경이에요. 1970년대부터 80년대까지 20년에 걸친 작가의 작품 여정을 볼 수 있죠. 루이지 기리는 ‘익숙한 풍경을 처음이자 마지막처럼 보라’고 말합니다. 새로운 이미지와 못 본 풍경을 갈망하는 시대. 그의 말은 한 번 더 생각하게 합니다. 루이지 기리가 말하는 사진은 ‘세상을 보는 방법’에 대한 이야기예요. 세상을 있는 그대로 복제하는 것이 아니라, 세상을 다시 생각하게 만드는 거울로서의 사진을 말한다고 할까요? 그의 사진 속에서는 실재와 이미지가 중첩되기도 하고, 프레임 안에 이질적인 것들이 태연히 존재해요. 긴장감이 상상력을 불러일으키죠. 다양한 풍경 사진들은 외부의 풍경이기도 하지만 내부의 풍경이기도 하고요. 뮤지엄 한미는 한미약품이 만든 사진관의 새 이름이에요. 창립 30주년을 맞아 2003년에 개관했고, 2022년에 삼청동으로 이전하여 ‘뮤지엄 한미 삼청’이라는 이름으로 재개관했죠. 국내 최초로 저온 수장고와 냉장 수장고를 갖추고 있어서 사진 보존 기한을 500년까지 늘렸어요. 모두가 손쉽게 고해상도의 사진을 찍는 지금, 필름 카메라 세대인 루이지 기리의 전시가 우리에게 주는 의미는 무엇일까요? 그의 작품이 다소 평범해 보일 수도 있는 건 그가 만든 시선이 지금의 ‘표준’이 됐기 때문이에요. 흑백 사진이 대세였던 시기에 컬러 사진의 새로운 가능성을 제시한 것, 엽서에 인쇄되는 명소 사진을 찍는 것이 아니라 일상의 이미지를 신선하게 보여준 것. 이 모든 것이 루이지 기리가 넓힌 사진의 세계예요. 그는 1968년 달 착륙 우주선이 지구를 촬영한 사진을 보고 결심했다고 해요. 모두가 지구 전체의 이미지를 볼 때, 자신은 정반대의 길로 가겠다고 생각했어요. 부분적이고 단편적인 것을 찍으며 무한한 다양성을 보여주겠다고 말이죠. ‘평범한 것을 새롭게 바라보는 눈’, 이것이 루이지 기리가 암시하는 ‘의미 있는 시선’이 아닐까요? Photography has become completely everyday. The evolution of the smartphone has practically become synonymous with the evolution of the camera. At some point, the desire to store things as photographs started to run ahead of actually observing and feeling them with our own eyes. We recently visited Museum HANMI, Korea’s first photography museum. It’s a two-story building tucked away at the far end of Samcheong-dong. Right now, the museum is hosting a major exhibition by Italian photographer Luigi Ghirri (1943–1992). Titled Infinite Landscapes, the show commemorates the 140th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Korea and Italy and traces twenty years of Ghirri’s artistic journey—from the 1970s through the 1980s.Ghirri once said: “Look at familiar landscapes as if for the first and last time.” In an age hungry for new images and unseen scenes, his words make us pause. For Ghirri, photography is ultimately about “a way of seeing.” It isn’t a simple reproduction of the world as it is; rather, it becomes a kind of mirror—one that makes us reconsider the world. In his photographs, reality and image overlap. Within the frame, incongruous elements coexist with complete nonchalance. That quiet tension invites the imagination. His landscapes are also inward landscapes—external scenes that somehow feel deeply internal. Museum HANMI is the new name of a photography institution founded by HANMI Pharmaceutical. The museum first opened in 2003 to mark the company’s 30th anniversary, and in 2022 it relocated to Samcheong-dong and reopened as “Museum HANMI Samcheong.” It is equipped with Korea’s first low-temperature and refrigerated storage facilities for photographs, extending the potential preservation lifespan of works to as long as 500 years.So what does a Luigi Ghirri exhibition—an artist from the film-camera generation—mean to us today, when everyone can effortlessly take high-resolution images? His work may appear almost ordinary now, but that’s precisely because his way of seeing has become part of our visual “standard.” At a time when black-and-white photography dominated, he opened up new possibilities for color. Instead of photographing postcard-perfect landmarks, he made everyday images feel fresh. This is the expanded world of photography that Ghirri helped create. It’s said that his turning point came in 1968, when he saw photographs of Earth taken by the spacecraft during the moon-landing era. While everyone was captivated by the complete image of the planet, he chose the opposite path.
