AI가 넘볼 수 없는 아우라 AI로 뚝딱 이미지를 생성하는 시대예요. 실재와 AI 이미지 구분은 더 어려워졌고요. 이런 세상에서 이미지의 ‘맥락’은 더 의미 있게 다가오지 않을까요? ‘흑인 퀴어 아티스트’라는 자신의 정체성에서 출발하는 작가. 마크 브래드포드(Mark Bradford)의 <keep walking> 전시가 열리고 있는 ‘아모레퍼시픽 미술관’을 다녀왔어요. LA를 기반으로 활동하고 있는 마크 브래드포드는 “역사와 경험은 내 작품과 분리될 수 없다”라고 말하죠. 도시 하층민이었던 유년 시절, 성소수자, 흑인이라는 삶의 맥락에서 실험적인 방식으로 메시지를 발신하는 유명한 작가예요. 작품만 봤을 때는 기발하고 대담한 젊은 아티스트라고 생각했는데 나이를 찾아보니 1961년생이더라고요. 자, 마크 브래드포드와 함께 ‘Keep walking’ 해볼까요? 그의 작품에서는 재료 자체가 메시지예요. 형형색색의 줄무늬가 전시장 바닥을 뒤덮고 있는 첫 번째 작품부터 체감할 수 있죠. 거리에 버려진 전단지와 포스터, 신문지로 만든 작품이에요. 도시의 부산물들인 종이들을 수집해서 겹겹이 쌓고, 긁어내고, 덧붙이는 방식으로 제작되었어요. 작품 위를 조심스럽게 걸으면서, 화려하고 질서 정연하게 보이는 도시가 얼마나 다양한 결로 이루어졌는지 생각해 보는 계기가 되었죠. 두 번째 시리즈는 작은 종이 조각을 연속적으로 붙인 대형 작품들이에요. 시리즈의 타이틀이자 종이의 정체는 바로 ‘파마 용지’(end paper). 유년 시절에 어머니의 미용실에서 봤던 종이를 성냥이나 토치로 그을리고 이어 붙여 다양한 테마의 작품을 만들었어요. 흑인 커뮤니티, 퀴어, 사회 소외계층에 대한 메시지를 발신하고 있죠. 마크 브래드포드는 사회적 메시지를 시각화하는데 탁월한 작가예요. 그의 작품을 ‘사회적 추상화’라고 부르는 이유죠. 자연재해와 질병, 인종차별, 젠트리피케이션 등 불가항력적인 상황에서 소외된 약자들의 이동을 기록한 <기차 시간표> 시리즈, 잡지 광고를 사용한 콜라주 작품 시리즈인 <신발 사이즈> 등 사회적 차별과 갈등을 표현한 작품들이 많아요. 인상적인 작품 중 하나는 종이로 제작한 다양한 크기의 지구 조형물이었어요. 우리가 같은 행성에 살아도 다른 세계를 공유하고 있다는 것을 보여주는 작품이에요. AI의 이미지 홍수 속에서도 사람이 불러일으키는 예술의 아우라는 여전할 거라고 믿어요. 작품은 소통이고, 작품을 관람하는 우리 역시 사람이니까요. We’re living in an era where AI can generate images in a snap. It’s getting harder to tell what’s real from what’s AI-made. In a world like this, doesn’t the context behind an image start to matter even more?we visited the Amorepacific Museum of Art, where Mark Bradford’s exhibition Keep Walking is currently on view. Bradford is an artist whose work begins with his own identity—as a Black queer artist—and expands outward into broader social realities. Based in Los Angeles, Bradford has said, “History and experience can’t be separated from my work.” He’s a major figure known for delivering messages through experimental methods rooted in the context of his life: a childhood shaped by life on the margins, and lived experience as a Black man and a member of the LGBTQ+ community. Just looking at the work, we initially assumed he must be a daring young artist—only to find out he was born in 1961.So, shall we keep walking with Mark Bradford? In his work, the material itself is the message. You feel that immediately in the first piece, where vivid stripes spread across the gallery floor. It’s made from discarded flyers, posters, and newspapers—urban leftovers collected from the street. Bradford gathers these paper remnants, layers them again and again, scrapes them away, and builds them back up. Walking carefully across the surface, we found myself thinking about how the city—so glossy and orderly at first glance—is actually made of countless textures and strata. The second series consists of monumental works built from small paper fragments repeated in sequence. The title of the series, and the identity of the paper itself, is “end paper”—the sheets used in perm treatments. Bradford draws on a memory from his childhood, when he saw this paper in his mother’s hair salon. He burns it with matches or a torch, then connects and layers the pieces to create works that unfold across different themes—sending messages about Black communities, queerness, and those pushed to society’s edges. Bradford is exceptionally skilled at turning social messages into visual form, which is why his work is often described as “social abstraction.” Many of his series address inequality and conflict: the Train Schedule works trace the movement of marginalized people—displaced by forces beyond their control such as natural disasters, disease, racism, and gentrification. Another series, Shoe Size, uses magazine advertisements in collages to expose systems of discrimination. One particularly striking piece featured globe-like sculptures made of paper in various sizes. It suggested that even though we live on the same planet, we don’t all share the same world. Even amid today’s flood of AI images, we still believe the aura of art—sparked by human presence—will endure.
