노벨문학상과 가까워지기 2024년 10월. 우리도 드디어 노벨문학상 수상자 보유국이 되었죠. ‘한강’ 작가의 수상으로 모국어로 노벨 문학 작품을 읽을 수 있다는 자부심까지 주었고요. 한강 작가의 소설을 사려는 사람들로 독립 서점들까지 분주한 모습을 보면서 종이책에 대한 열풍이 지속되기를 응원했던 기억이 새롭네요. 지난달 9일에 올해의 노벨문학상이 발표됐죠. 2025년 수상자는 헝가리 작가인 ‘크러스너호르커이 라슬로’에게 돌아갔어요. 전쟁과 기후 위기 등 종말론적 분위기에서 예술의 힘을 믿게 하는 작가로 평가받고 있어요. 크러스너호르커이 라슬로의 ‘사탄의 탱고’는 노벨상 발표 직후 교보문고에서 실시간 베스트셀러 1위를 차지하고, 지금도 여전히 종합 순위 2위에 머물고 있어요. 공산주의 붕괴 후 희망을 잃은 사람들의 이야기를 다루고 있어서 읽기가 쉽지 않지만, 절망과 비극조차 대면하게 만드는 소설이에요. 이처럼 노벨상은 지금 우리에게 필요한 이야기가 무엇인지 생각하게 해요. 서두가 길었네요. 정독도서관에 생긴 ‘노벨문학라운지’를 소개하려고 합니다. 북촌에 있는 정독도서관은 옛 경기고등학교 건물이에요. 1938년에 설립된 경기고는 1976년에 삼성동으로 이전하고, 옛 경기고 건물은 1977년 정독도서관으로 개관했어요. 도서관으로 리노베이션 되었지만 학교 모습이 많이 남아있어요. 본관 건물 입구와 긴 복도, 실내 계단, 물레방아가 돌아가는 연못, 등나무 벤치 등 학교의 정취를 찾아보는 것도 재미있었어요. 지난달 18일에 개관한 노벨문학 라운지는 세 개 건물 중 2동에 위치하고 있어요. 라운지에 들어서는 순간, 위대한 작품들의 행렬에 황홀한 기분에 빠져들 거예요. 1901년부터 2025년까지 122명의 작가의 작품을 한눈에 볼 수 있거든요. 120여 년의 긴 시간이 압축되어 있는 공간에서 한 권 한 권 눈을 맞춰보는 것도 좋은 경험이었어요. 아는 작가도 찾아보고, 아는 작가의 모르는 작품들도 확인할 수 있고요. 우리에게 익숙하지 않은 작가는 익숙하지 않은 나라의 작가일 수도 있어요. 불편한 주제의 소설은 너무나 현실적인 내용이기 때문 일 수도 있고요. 매일 수억 개의 영상이 만들어지는 숏폼, 유튜브 시대에 우리는 능동적으로 사유하는 힘을 잃고 있을지도 몰라요. 텍스트로 쓰인 서사는 자극에 익숙해진 뇌를 회복시키는 좋은 방법이라고 해요. 노벨문학라운지에 한번 가보세요. 내가 태어난 연도에 어떤 작가가 노벨문학상 수상자가 되었는지도 보고, 라운지에 마련된 필사 경험도 해보고, 읽고 싶은 단 한 권의 책을 발견하는 것만으로도 우리의 뇌는 사유를 시작할 테니까요. I still remember the scene vividly—independent bookstores bustling with readers eager to purchase her books, and the hope that this renewed enthusiasm for printed books would continue. Last month, on the 9th, this year’s Nobel Prize in Literature was announced. The 2025 laureate is László Krasznahorkai, a Hungarian writer known for making readers believe in the power of art amid apocalyptic atmospheres shaped by war and climate crisis. His novel Satantango shot to No.1 on Kyobo Bookstore’s real-time bestseller list immediately after the announcement, and it still remains at No.2 overall. The book portrays the despair of people who lost hope after the collapse of communism—far from an easy read, but one that forces us to confront tragedy and desolation head-on. This is the essence of the Nobel Prize: it compels us to reflect on the stories we need most right now. I digress. I’m here to introduce the newly opened Nobel Literature Lounge at the Jeongdok Public Library. Located in Bukchon, the library occupies the former campus of Gyeonggi High School. Founded in 1938, the school moved to Samseong-dong in 1976, and the old building was reborn as Jeongdok Library in 1977. Though renovated into a library, many traces of the school remain—the entrance of the main building, its long corridors, indoor staircases, the pond with a turning waterwheel, and the benches under the wisteria pergola. Discovering these remnants of the past feels like a small journey of its own. The Nobel Literature Lounge, which opened on the 18th of last month, is located in Building 2 among the three structures. The moment you step inside, you’ll feel swept away by the presence of great literary works—the complete lineup of 122 Nobel laureates from 1901 to 2025 laid out before you. In this space, where more than 120 years of history are compressed into a single room, taking the time to meet each book eye-to-eye is a rewarding experience. You may rediscover authors you already know, find unfamiliar works by familiar writers, or encounter writers from countries you’ve rarely read. Some novels may be uncomfortable—precisely because they deal so honestly with reality. In an era dominated by short-form videos and endless streams of YouTube content, we may be losing our ability to think actively.
