옛 서울역, 100주년을 축하해! 도시 곳곳의 이야기를 탐사하고 마블로켓 관점으로 소개하는 어반리서치가 100회를 맞았어요. 100번째 어반리서치 테마는 ‘문화역서울 284’. 옛 서울역 준공 100주년을 기념하는 전시 <백 년과 하루>가 한창이에요. 100번째 어반리서치의 서울역 100주년 이야기. 들어보실래요? 문화역서울 284는 1925년에 준공된 옛 서울역사예요. 경성역이라는 이름은 해방 후 서울역으로 바뀌었고, 2004년에 현재의 서울역이 완공되면서 자리를 내어주게 되었죠. 옛 서울역은 2011년 복원 사업을 통해 복합문화공간으로 다시 태어났어요. 이름의 ‘284’는 사적 번호를 말하고요. 전 세계 많은 역들이 옛 서울역과 같은 수순을 밟고 있어요. 기차역에서 문화공간으로 바뀐 대표적인 사례는 1986년에 개장한 파리의 ‘오르세 미술관’이죠. 미국 솔트레이크시티의 옛 철도 야적장은 쇼핑몰로 바뀌었다가 2010년에 호텔과 오피스, 갤러리 등으로 구성된 ‘더 게이트웨이’ 복합문화공간이 됐고요. 옛 서울역으로 돌아올게요. 문화역서울 284에서 진행 중인 <백 년과 하루>는 다양한 문화 집단이 참여한 프로젝트예요. 옛 서울역을 중심으로 우리의 근현대사를 회고하기 위한 전시는 세 챕터로 구성되어 있어요. 첫 번째 챕터는 7명의 현대미술 작가들이 서울역의 의미를 입체적으로 조망하고 있어요. 홀을 장식하고 있는 11m의 디지털 장치는 서울역의 도면과 역사자료, 옛 지도 등이 중첩된 작품이에요. 서울역이 확산의 거점이자 근대 시간관념을 일깨운 곳이라는 메시지를 전하고 있어요. 또한 100년의 역사를 사진 아카이브로 전시하고 있는데요, 역 앞에 모여 광복의 기쁨을 만끽하는 사람들, 625 전쟁의 피난민들, 귀성객으로 혼잡한 명절 사진을 보면서 역사는 사건의 나열이 아니라 집단 감정으로 짜인 직물 같은 시간임을 알 수 있어요. 두 번째 챕터에서는 옛 서울역 주변 지역을 기억하기 위한 프로젝트예요. 서울역사 뒤편에 서울 최대 규모의 패션 가죽 시장이 있었던 점에 착안해서 패턴 브랜드인 ‘오우르’와 협업한 전시가 열리고, 서울에서 가장 오래된 음반사인 ‘오아시스 레코드’와 협업해 옛 도시에서 흘렀던 대중가요와 팝송이 공간 한편에 플레이되고 있어요. 마지막으로는 문학적 상상으로 만나는 서울역 이야기예요. 서울역이 배경이 되거나 언급된 문학 작품 속 문장을 소개하고, 100년 후 서울역의 미래를 상상해 보는 작업이에요. 여기서 끝이 아니에요. 지하에 비밀공간이 오픈 됐거든요. 100년 전에도 발길이 닿지 않았던 공간. 4 플랫폼으로 나가면 현재의 서울역과 연결되어 있어요. 여러분에게 서울역은 어떤 곳인가요? <백 년과 하루> 전시에서 우리의 서울역, 나의 서울역을 만나보세요. The theme of this centennial feature is “Culture Station Seoul 284.” It coincides with the exhibition “One Hundred Years and a Day,” celebrating the 100th anniversary of the old Seoul Station’s completion. Here’s the story of Seoul Station’s centenary, the 100th Urban Research. Shall we begin? Culture Station Seoul 284 is the former Seoul Station building, completed in 1925. Originally named Gyeongseong Station during the Japanese colonial period, it was renamed Seoul Station after Korea’s liberation. When the current Seoul Station opened in 2004, the old station was retired from service. In 2011, it was reborn as a multifunctional cultural complex through a restoration project. The number “284” in its name refers to its designation as Historic Site No. 284. Across the world, many old train stations have followed a similar path of transformation. One of the most famous examples is the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, which reopened as an art museum in 1986. In the U.S., a former railroad yard in Salt Lake City was once converted into a shopping mall and later redeveloped in 2010 into The Gateway, a mixed-use cultural space with hotels, offices, and galleries. Now, let’s return to Seoul. The exhibition <A Century and a Day> at Culture Station Seoul 284 brings together a variety of cultural groups to revisit Korea’s modern and contemporary history through the lens of the old station. It is organized into three chapters. The first chapter features seven contemporary artists offering multidimensional perspectives on the meaning of Seoul Station. In the main hall, an 11-meter digital installation overlays architectural blueprints, historical documents, and old maps, expressing the idea that Seoul Station served as a hub of expansion and a symbol of modern time consciousness. A photo archive traces the station’s 100-year history — from citizens celebrating liberation in front of the station, to refugees of the Korean War, to holiday crowds during homecoming seasons — revealing how history is not just a sequence of events, but a fabric woven from collective emotions. The second chapter focuses on remembering the neighborhood surrounding the old station. Drawing inspiration from the once-bustling leather and fashion market behind the station, the exhibition features a collaboration with the design brand OUWR. Another collaboration with Oasis Records, the oldest record label in Seoul, fills the space with popular songs that once echoed through the city. Finally, the third chapter reimagines Seoul Station through literature. It presents literary excerpts in which Seoul Station appears or is referenced and invites visitors to imagine what the station might be like a hundred years from now. But that’s not all — a secret underground space has been newly opened, one that even a century ago was inaccessible.
