‘리움미술관’이라는 콘텐츠 서울의 문화 자산과 콘텐츠에 집중하게 될 어반리서치 시즌2. 마블로켓이 첫 번째 찾아간 곳은 ‘리움 미술관’이에요. 세계적인 건축가인 렘 쿨하스, 장누벨, 마리오 보타의 공동설계로 2004년 개관부터 화제가 됐었죠. 지금까지 독보적인 존재감을 유지하고 있고요. 리움미술관은 화제의 기획 전시와 2개의 상설 전시로 운영되고 있어요. 지금은 한국을 대표하는 이불 작가의 30년 대서사를 볼 수 있는 전시로 주목받고 있죠. Ⓒ마블로켓 해외에서 더 큰 파장을 일으킨 이불 작가는 다양한 주제와 거침없는 형식으로 눈길을 사로잡고 있어요. ‘20세기 현대미술 작가 50인 중 유일한 아시아 작가‘로 선정되기도 했고요. 이번 전시의 제목은 <이불 : 1998년 이후>. 대형설치, 조각, 유화 등 150점을 통해 그녀의 작품 세계를 감상할 수 있어요. 난해하거나 그로테스크하더라도 당황하지 마세요. 현대미술은 다 이해하지 못해도, 새롭게 해석해도 상관없으니까요. Ⓒ마블로켓 Ⓒ마블로켓 기술 문명에 대한 경계, 사회정치적 부조리, 억압받고 있는 몸, 정체성에 대한 추구 등 이불 작가는 시대의 맥락에서 끝없이 저항하고 의문을 던져요. 예를 들어 검게 채워진 욕조는 물고문으로 희생된 ‘박종철 열사‘의 비극을 떠올리게 하고, 고래 혀 형태의 작품은 세월호 참사를 추모하고 있어요. 수많은 거울과 조명으로 파편화된 이미지를 보여주는 작품은 2005년부터 이불작가의 관심영역이에요. 관람객들은 실제 작품을 통과하면서 어지럽게 조각난 자신과 대면할 수 있어요. 인간의 의식이 선천적인 것이 아니라 문화와 환경 속에서 형성되는 것을 암시하는 작품이기도 하죠. Our first destination: the Leeum Museum of Art. Designed collaboratively by world-renowned architects Rem Koolhaas, Jean Nouvel, and Mario Botta, the museum made headlines when it opened in 2004—and it continues to stand out as outstanding landmark in Korea’s art scene. Leeum operates with two permanent exhibitions and one special exhibition. Currently, it’s drawing significant attention for a large-scale retrospective of Lee Bul, one of Korea’s most prominent artists, whose three-decade career is being showcased in its entirety. Celebrated even more widely abroad, Lee Bul captivates audiences with her fearless approach to form and theme. She was also named the only Asian artist among the 50 most influential contemporary artists of the 20th century. The exhibition, titled Lee Bul: From 1998 On, features around 150 works, including large-scale installations, sculptures, and oil paintings. Some may appear complex or even grotesque, but don’t be intimidated—contemporary art doesn’t need to be fully understood. It’s open to reinterpretation. Lee Bul’s work persistently questions and resists the structures of modern civilization. Through her art, she confronts issues such as technological anxiety, socio-political absurdity, the oppressed body, and the search for identity. For instance, a black-filled bathtub evokes the tragic death of Park Jong-cheol, a student tortured during Korea’s authoritarian era, while a whale-tongue-shaped sculpture mourns the Sewol Ferry disaster.Since 2005, Lee Bul has explored the fragmentation of identity through works composed of mirrors and lights, reflecting disjointed images of the self. As visitors walk through these pieces, they come face-to-face with their fractured reflections—an experience suggesting that human consciousness is not innate but shaped by culture and environment. In the Korean Traditional Art Gallery, visitors can admire celadon, buncheong ware, and white porcelain masterpieces, including several national treasures. The collection also spans Buddhist art, folk crafts, and wooden furniture, along with paintings by masters such as Jeong Seon and Kim Hong-do. The Contemporary Art Gallery is equally impressive. To mark the 60th anniversary of the Samsung Foundation of Culture, Leeum presents key works from its collection along with 44 newly acquired pieces. The show features sculptures by Rodin and Alberto Giacometti, as well as works by leading Korean artists Lee Ufan and Haegue Yang. Rather than arranging them chronologically or thematically, the curators have placed pieces in ways that invite unexpected dialogues—encouraging visitors to make their own visual comparisons. From Korean antiquities to modern and contemporary art, and to its dynamic special exhibitions — Leeum Museum of Art embodies the very essence of Seoul’s cultural identity.
